They feed the hungry and gave drinks to the thirsty. They used to smack my dads hand at school with a ruler when he was naughty. They were the teachers at St Marys when dad was there. They were from Ireland and Catherine McAuley started the group of the Sisters of Mercy in 1831. In Hokitika they started teaching in 1878 and in 1978 they celebrated 100 years. The sisters of Mercy do not teach anymore at St Marys. Jakes house used to be the Sisters home.
They taught at St Marys, The sisters are no longer in Hokitika. They celebrated 100 years in 1978 and the meral is in the school hall and the colours are pale blue-white- and gold. Sisters do not marry or have children they comit themselves to the church and they wear silver or white gold rings. They where started in the mid 18 hundreds, to help people in need. Our last sister left Hokitika last year and she did readings at church, Her name was sister Mary and now she has moved to Christchurch.
